Afternoon Sail

american-fantasyThis story is one I’m particularly proud of. Well, not the story itself, though it’s okay, but I think I’ve written better ones. The reason this particular story is so special to me is because it appeared in American Fantasy along with one other piece of fiction. The other story in that issue was “Garage Sale” by Lois McMaster Bujold. I met her at a Science Fiction convention before this was published at a time when she was on the verge of selling the first Miles book (as I remember it). The year American Fantasy came out I got to talk to her again and she told me that “Garage Sale” was the only thing she’d sold that year. So, for a single year, I was on par with Lois McMaster Bujold. Sure didn’t stay up with her for long. Anyway, here’s a sample of the story that had me in her league for a brief moment. I hope you enjoy it.  The complete story is available in the collection below.
