I’m currently following the Beargrease Dog Sled Marathon tracker which means I’m not getting much writing done. In the midst of that, my editor sent back a chapter she finished reviewing and said that there was too much explanation of the magic system for her taste. How much explanation do I need? I think some of what I wrote is needed to build on in later chapters, magic that the main character learns and that he will need to use later. Nonetheless, I’m not sure whether I need two plus pages to describe what he must do to complete the list of spells necessary. Just asking. Is it too much or will readers who love fantasy like reading about how the spells work?
