Lessons from Pickup Sandlot Baseball

When I was a kid, often during the summer we went to the sandlot and picked up sides to play baseball.  There were no adults present, no umpires, no one to settle disputes when there was a close play.  There was only us.  And one thing we all learned was how to compromise.  If there was a close call, often there would be a disagreement.  Was the runner safe or out.  We soon realized that we could argue about it all day and not play baseball, or we could agree to a call and get back to playing.  Seems like a valuable lesson.

Now if I could only get characters in my books to do what I want.
