Work on the final draft of “Fall of the Western Kings” continues, now passing page 250. While I’ve been writing I’ve been thinking about what makes a good “sword and sorcery” fantasy novel. The book I’m working on has magic swords, dragons, wizards with great powers and weaknesses, shape-changers, elves, nymphs and fantastic characters from other realms. It has one main character, Gant, who is a superior swordsman that fate forces to be an outlaw despite his attempts to do good. More than that, the book is populated with some fascinating secondary characters who may be more interesting than he is. There is intrigue and treachery, battles on a grand scale and battles between individuals. There are sadly no dwarves but they do get mentioned. What else would any reader want who loves this kind of book?
